It often meant people did not know their neighbours people living in the one time and space could have nothing in common. It meant that it did not matter what your neighbours were doing, and they just like you, lived in their own little universes. Cities allow people to build their own little universes around their own needs, tastes and desires, populated with like minded people. I was raised when artistically cities were known for their anonymity - individuals are like a drop in the ocean. The idea of a book about a city - a metropolis at that - raises all sorts of questions. I much preferred and recommend McCann’s and. The further I got into the book, the less I enjoyed it. One of the characters I cared about disappears early on. Just as I was getting interested in one storyline, it abruptly shifts to something completely different. The wire walker is not the main focus of this book. After a promising start, it becomes a loosely connected series of short stories, some of which appealed to me while others decidedly did not. Ciaran arrives later and cannot quite approve of how Corrie is living. Corrie is a priest living in proximity to a group of prostitutes and drug addicts. I felt drawn into the story of brothers from Ireland, Corrie and Ciaran. I very much enjoyed the beginning and the first few chapters.
